Time for a much needed keycaps update. As you know by now I’m working on Elven/Dwarven keycaps, the colors are finalized –which is a big achievement– but dye-sublimation is proving more difficult than anticipated. I received various rounds of prototypes in these last weeks but the manufacturer doesn’t seem able to get all the pieces right. The problem I believe is a mix of multi-color legends together with the side prints.

I like compact keyboards layouts but I need my arrow cluster, that’s why I never adventured in sub 65%… until now. I tried to find a PCB that supported all the features that I wanted but couldn’t find one, so had to resort –once again– to hand wiring.

I hate it when you have that great idea for a new keyboard layout but you can’t make it because you miss that weird spacebar size. So here they are, MT3 spacebars in all shapes and form. Please note: these are not the same 3D models used to make the actual molds. I redesigned them so we could have spacebar sizes and stem positions not currently supported by the “official” MT3 profile. Well, I designed the MT3 profile, so I guess these are official too :)

We gave too much attention to the Elves recently. We all love them, but we know how pain in a$$ they could be. The previous batch of prototypes for Dwarvish was all messed up so I haven’t showed you anything… until today! I’ve got more prototypes and the sets are simply delicious!

Ever wanted to create a custom keycap to match an existing MT3 set? Of course you can make a mold out of the original but what if you could work directly on a high resolution 3D model?

Well wait no more, STL for ROW 0 and 6.25u spacebar are here! Use them freely even for commercial products but please give credit. The license is Attribution-ShareAlike just let your customers know your work is based on MT3 profile designed by me and we are good :)

If there’s enough interest I will release more keys and possibly spacebars in every possible size. With 3D printers becoming cheaper and easier to use it’s nice to be able to print that one spacebar size needed for some weird custom keyboard.

Of course I’d love to see what you do with the files. Now go creative!

Very quick but very juicy update. I got the first batch of prototypes for the Tolkien sets and they are lovely!

Tolkien sets development proceeds at a steady pace. All colors have been finalized and they are delicious! Legends should be final; for the Elvish set most of the work was already done (from previous Sindarin keycaps), for Dwarvish things are a little more complicated.

The official material is very sparse so I had to rely on Neo Cirth, which is an effort to expand the little Dwarvish vocabulary we have documented from Tolkien. It won’t be super accurate, but it’s a close approximation.

Development of the Tolkien sets is proceeding at a steady pace. The colors are pretty much final and the manufacturer has already produced a few test keycaps. This is just a quick update before the Holidays.

It took forever but it’s kinda sorta semi-official that we will soon™ release licensed Tolkien keyboards, keycaps, desktop mat, …

It’s not clear yet how much stuff we are going to do, but I would like to start from a few sets of Elven and –this time also– Dwarven keycaps. Both being composed by extremely complicated glyphs we can’t do double-shot, so this is going to be MT3 profile in PBT material with dye-sublimated legends. It is somehow limiting in the color selection (we can’t use light on dark schemes) but we can use any sort of iconography from the Tolkien world.
